Baby Monitors Are Being Hacked Protect Your Family (Video)

Summary of Baby Monitor Hack:

Essentially they are an IP camera, assigned a particular internet protocol address. This address is more than likely assigned automatically from the router/modem in your home. That router/modem is what your internet service provider has given you in order to access the internet from the outside world. There are a few things that a hacker needs to know in order to hack these baby monitors.

Hackers Need To Know:

IP Address of the equipment

How they obtain, a simple network scan using a great

assortment of available tools will do the trick here

Password:

As with everything many people fail to change their passwords from the default. Most of what hackers need is available in the cameras manual, which will not provide here, but it is available via an internet search. We are hoping that these companies begin to increasingly take the security of children seriously, but the onus is not only on the companies’, but also on all of us to protect ourselves. Here are a few of the main ways we can secure these cameras:

  1. Make sure your home/standard internet passwords are not the default

  2. Change the default user name (which is usually admin), along with changing the default password upon set-up of the equipment.

  3. Ensure that you are updating the software regularly so that you don’t miss important security patches

  4. Don’t place the monitor or the accompanying equipment near windows, or anywhere where strangers can see it. Many times, we have ADT stickers, we want everyone to know that we are protected, in this case do the opposite.

  5. On a more advanced level you could install a firewall and use freely available tools to check your router for intrusion

In conclusion, we currently live in a smarter, more connected world and that although awesome, also increases our security vulnerabilities. Stay vigilant, do the basics, become a hard target.
